Travel medical insurance is required for every Schengen visa application, and the wrong policy is one of the most common reasons applications are sent back. Here is what the consulate checks.
The minimum requirements
- At least €30,000 of medical cover (about £26,000; check the exchange rate when you buy).
- Valid in every Schengen country, not just the one you’re applying to.
- Covers your whole stay, from the day you enter to the day you leave.
- Covers emergency medical treatment, hospital stays and repatriation to the UK for medical reasons, including in the event of death.
What the certificate should show
Bring a certificate or policy letter, not just a booking confirmation. It should clearly state:
- Your full name, matching your passport.
- The start and end dates of cover.
- The territory covered, such as “Schengen States” or “Europe”.
- The medical and repatriation cover amounts.
- The insurer’s name and a 24-hour emergency contact number.
Is a GHIC enough?
No. The UK Global Health Insurance Card gives you access to state healthcare in some countries, but it doesn’t cover repatriation or private treatment, so it doesn’t meet the visa requirement. Take your GHIC as well as your travel insurance, but not instead of it.
Annual policies
An annual multi-trip policy is fine if it meets all of the above. Check that it covers trips as long as yours (many cap a single trip at 31 days) and that the certificate names the Schengen Area.
Multiple-entry visas
If you’re applying for a multiple-entry visa, your insurance only needs to cover your first planned trip. Sign the declaration on the application form confirming you’ll buy cover for later trips, and remember to do it.
Practical tips
- Add a day or two either side of your travel dates in case your flights change.
- Buy insurance that can be cancelled or amended if your visa is refused or delayed.
- Check pre-existing medical conditions are declared. An invalid policy won’t help you if you need it.
